Googles modular phone can be extended with hardware modules. Such (hardware) modules can be used by Android apps (software) that are present on the phone. Together, the app and the module can do "something you can't do with a smartphone today".
In a previous post, the idea for 3D photo's has been presented.
Idea 2: multimeter
Many parts of the multimeter (housing, display, buttons, switch) can be provided by the smartphone. The new module should contain the two sockets where the red and black cords can be attached, the needed electronic components to measure the voltage/current/resistance and the connection to the basic phone to communicate the measured values to the app.
The app can display the actual measured values but also store these values. Using voice control, the measured values can be labelled with meta-information that describes where/how a measurement has been done. If needed, the measured values can directly be uploaded to some system in the cloud.
