Googles modular phone can be extended with hardware modules. Such (hardware) modules can be used by Android apps (software) that are present on the phone. Together, the app and the module can do "something you can't do with a smartphone today".
In previous posts, several ideas have been presented. Here is one more.
Idea 5: hitchhiker tool
When you are at home, you probably have a bottle opener and a cigarette lighter available. While hitchhiking (and so travelling light) it would be convenient to have all these necessary tools with you without the need to carry additional items (which can be easily lost).
A module for the modular phone can easily solve this. The housing of the module contains a bottle opener similar to the YourBottleCard. Inside the module, accessible via the opening of the BottleCard, is a ignite ligther, a "rechargeable flameless lighter".

At little extra cost, a fire and/or smoke alarm can be added to the module as well. Very convenient when you stay at budget hotels. When fire is detected, the speaker of the smartphone is used to alarm you, and when you don't react within 30 seconds the smartphone will automatically call 911 (or 112, or whatever alarm number). At this alarm, the smartphone uses all available means (GPS, WiFi, ip-address) to report your location as accurate as possible. And of course, the screen of the smartphone presents the message "Don't Panic" to you.
